In the land of hyperbole and loud voices, it’s sometimes hard to hear the desires and dreams of the far left amid the chaos. After all, we can all agree that everyone wants America to succeed, even if some folks have a rather peculiar way of showing it. Consider the well-meaning, if not misguided, protests in Los Angeles, which turned into an exasperating display of chaos. Here came a scenario where Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were performing their duty — arresting and deporting those without legal status in the country. But apparently, enforcing legal standards is a bridge too far for some, who would rather sing kumbaya while the country plays host to a wave of undeterred lawbreakers.
Now, suppose one were to see things from the progressive perspective. Certainly, sending those lawbreakers packing seems heartless when, as they put it, these undocumented guests are just trying to do the jobs no one else wants — like snipping hedges and other everyday business of America. Never mind that these folks might be misunderstood souls looking to share their skills in the American cultural fabric.
This brings us to the revelry that erupted when federal officers were pelted with rocks and incidents of vandalism occurred amidst a carnival of flags signifying all manner of dubious oppressions. One has to marvel at the twisted logic that concludes that the best way to improve the quality of life in America is to hold high the standards of lands from which people are fleeing. It’s as if replacing free market principles with chaotic rule is a badge of honor. Ah, the intellectual gymnastics.
Perhaps their ire comes from unmet expectations: who knew that not letting a gentleman pay for dinner would be so vexing?
Finally, one might wish to awake from this fever dream of politics to realize it was all just a nightmare. But alas, it’s not a dream — it’s Los Angeles, where everyone seems to have their own idea of paradise. It’s enough to make anyone want to lob dispatches from the safety of your own soapbox. Nonetheless, before reaching for that bullhorn, one should maybe think about providing air support. There are, after all, proper channels for addressing discord that don’t involve incidents of vandalism, and that could make for a fascinating chat with the neighbors across the aisle.
