In the heart of Florida’s Space Coast, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is on a mission to ensure the safety of its communities. With an enthusiastic attitude, they are partnering with federal law enforcement agencies to tackle illegal immigration head-on. By working together with the United States Border Patrol, they are making significant strides in getting illegal immigrants off the streets and back to where they belong, out of the country.
So, how does this partnership work? Well, it all starts with the sheriff’s deputies. They patrol the roads, ready to conduct traffic stops on vehicles that breach the law. If during these stops the deputies have a hint—let’s call it reasonable suspicion—that someone in the vehicle may be in the country illegally, they call in the Border Patrol to confirm their immigration status. It’s like a game of detective—only instead of solving a whodunit, they are figuring out who shouldn’t be here in the first place.
During recent operations, deputies encountered quite a variety of situations. On one particular stop, three occupants had valid work permits while one gentleman from Mexico presented only a Mexican voter ID. Unfortunately for him, his status was confirmed as illegal, leading to his arrest. In another case, all four occupants in a vehicle were found to be in the country unlawfully. One of them even had a criminal history and another had an outstanding deportation warrant. Talk about hitting the jackpot of illegal immigration enforcement—there was even a need to call a tow truck since nobody was left to drive the car home!
Sergeant Jason West, overseeing these proactive efforts, recognizes the importance of their work in maintaining the safety of Brevard County and the entire state. He knows that illegal immigrants with criminal backgrounds pose a real threat, especially if they are affiliated with gangs. By removing these individuals from the community, the deputies believe they are making Florida a safer place for everyone. After all, when it comes to safety, it’s better to be proactive than reactive.
But Bert County deputies have more than just a few traffic stops up their sleeves. Throughout a single shift, they managed to take nine illegal aliens into custody and process them for deportation. Interestingly, Florida does not operate as a sanctuary state, which means that the sheriff’s office is committed to honoring detainers placed by the Border Patrol. This has created an environment where local law enforcement can actively assist in the broader goal of curbing illegal immigration.
This operation is set to continue throughout the year, with plans for ongoing collaboration with Border Patrol. The sheriff’s office has already seen impressive results. On one of their earlier days of operation, they detained 10 or 11 individuals, followed by 16 on another day. With numbers like these, it’s clear that the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is serious about their mission. It’s a shame that other states or agencies aren’t as eager to partner up, but for Brevard County, the commitment is clear: to keep the streets safe and secure for everyone.
