Andrew Klavan Unpacks ‘One Battle After Another’ Drama

In today’s whirlwind of political paranoia and cinematic mirages, America seems caught in an amusing and rather dizzying narrative loop, as captured by the latest Hollywood offering. While one might think this is another humble indie flick from Paul Thomas Anderson, it has been unleashed with the gusto of a summer blockbuster. Crafted with a blend of levity, naked ambition (pun intended), and star-studded flair, it whisks audiences through an unchecked delusion — one where revolutionaries are the heroes, leftist rhetoric gets top billing, and the fantastical is confused for reality.

The film, praised by the darlings of left-leaning media, appears to be less about storytelling and more about propagating a fanciful political narrative. It’s like a fever dream of those dreaming about punitive measures for the rich or crafting utopias based on theoretical injustice. Yet, these reviews, brimming with starry admiration, miss one crucial plot point: in their quest for an alternate universe, they sometimes commit the cardinal sin of promoting the exact violence they claim to critique. It all sounds quite frightful for a trip to the cinema, doesn’t it?

Now, one might wonder if culture really is the reality-forging contraption that some propose. Maybe to progressive creative minds, but down here on Earth, culture reflects — it doesn’t rewrite. The idea that Hollywood flicks have the power to completely construct our reality seems rather like assigning the tail with the role of wagging the dog. Sure, movies tell us about society — the anxious imaginations of the filmmakers and actors — but they are more like funhouse mirrors than warp zones into alternate dimensions.

In this topsy-turvy landscape, it’s interesting to see how leftist views get romanticized even when history offers sagas of their undeniable downfalls. Reality apparently takes a back seat in a left-leaning limousine where America’s supposed tyranny is constantly applauded by those inside. If one thinks of the imagination as a powerful lens through which one interprets invisible realities, then these narratives are the hallucinations of a culture on the brink of overdosing on its own sanctimonious ideals.

And so, amidst all this, it’s no wonder the cultural battlefield requires constant navigation from those with common sense. One can imagine the surprise when nearly half of the left-leaning populace admits to fantasies about bringing harm to the successful. Yet, if conservatives are ever to navigate this cultural maze, they must broaden their horizons beyond the political lead knobs of tax codes and policy papers. It’s high time they carved their own mark on this swirling cultural canvas, lest the next generation learns to see America only through pastel-tinted glasses of political fiction.
