AI Epidemic Alert: Are Our Brains Being Overheated by Technology?

### Are We Becoming a Nation of Screen Zombies?

Recent studies reveal an alarming trend regarding how much time the average American spends gazing at screens. Brace yourselves: Americans are reportedly spending a whopping two hours and 21 minutes a day on social media alone! With social media acting as a rabbit hole, those minutes quickly add up, contributing to a grand total of six hours and 38 minutes spent on screens connected to the internet daily. That’s practically a part-time job! Now, one has to wonder—what’s so enticing about endlessly scrolling through cat memes and political hot takes?

You may find this shocking, but leisure reading in the U.S. has hit an all-time low. Only 16% of Americans aged 15 and older engage in reading for pleasure on any given day. That number stood at nearly 30% just two decades ago! In 2021, US adults reported reading an average of only 12.6 books a year, down from 15 in the years between 2002 and 2016. It seems that instead of diving into an intriguing novel, many of us are opting for bite-sized, sugary content that’s more akin to candy than nourishing literature.

As our attention spans shrink, many important elements of life are being compromised. The art of conversation is fading away, as is the simple pleasure of reflection. People seem to be losing connection—not just with each other but with their own thoughts. It’s almost as if society is descending into a collective stupor, relying on our screens for entertainment while trading away our capacity for deep thought. Complicated storylines and nuanced discussions? Forget about it! Why bother when you can catch a quick clip on TikTok instead?

The implications of this screen addiction are staggering. A new study points out that even artificial intelligence—yes, you read that right—could be experiencing “brain rot” due to the toxicity of the shallow content we consume. Large Language Models (LLMs) trained on viral, shallow material are showing signs of cognitive decline. Their ability to reason and remember information is plummeting faster than a lead balloon. This makes one ponder: if even machines can wither away on junk data, what does that say about our own minds?

It feels like we’re being served a wake-up call, but are we even paying attention? Society has become so enamored with its screens that it risks losing its ability to think critically. We need to ask ourselves important questions: What kind of content are we consuming? Are we allowing ourselves to be controlled by algorithms designed to keep us entertained but uninformed? Change is tough, but understanding the problem is the first step in reclaiming our lives from this digital addiction.

The stark reality is that when we indulge in shallow digital fare, we are quenching our thirst for something meaningful. We could stand to spend a bit more time with books and a little less time scrolling aimlessly. Next time you consider picking up your phone, think about diving into a good book instead. Reclaiming our attention and passion for reading wouldn’t just make us more informed individuals—it might also save the very fabric of our society from disintegration. It’s up to us to take charge, Americans, lest we end up as mere shadows of ourselves, happily lost in the digital ether without the slightest clue of what we’ve lost.
