Why Do Black Diners Keep Sending Food Back at Restaurants?

There are times when dining out feels more like a game of dodgeball than enjoying a meal, and recently some folks in the culinary world took that concept to a whole new level. Imagine this: you’re at a restaurant, excited for a hearty meal, and the owner pops by your table to inform you that certain folks, namely black people, aren’t welcome. Wait, what? Was this guy mistaking his eatery for a private club or something? It turns out he’s running a “no fun allowed” zone, and with a side of eggs, too!

Now, let’s break this down like a perfect omelet. This poor couple thought they were just going out for a nice steak and some eggs benedict—classic breakfast for dinner choice, might I add. The wife even sent her steak back for not being cooked right. This was getting serious; how could a restaurant mess up steak? It’s like baking a cake and forgetting the sugar! But instead of an improved dish, they got a return of the same sad plate. It seems the chef thought they were running an establishment of culinary defiance—“You just have to eat it. That’s the way it’s supposed to be!” Apparently, ‘the way it’s supposed to be’ isn’t on any health department’s approved list.

But the real kicker? The restaurant owner decided to grace them with his less-than-royal presence, declaring that the couple, specifically the black partners of the duo, were unwelcome. How about that for a dining experience? It’s hard to say what’s more appalling: the awful service or the blatant racism served as a side dish. I can’t even imagine the restaurant’s Yelp reviews; they’d probably be filled with one-star ratings along the lines of, “Great food if you meet their unwritten guidelines.”

You’ve got to love the audacity of some people. It’s like he’s trying to turn that joint into a reality show episode called “Exclusion Eats.” Someone should remind him it’s 2023, not 1923. His idea of hospitality seems more like an audition for a role in a drama about segregation. It’s surprising how some individuals think they can slip back into the dark ages of dining decorum. Spoiler alert: it didn’t work then, and it certainly won’t work now.

In the end, the couple left the restaurant, presumably hungry and with a story to share. But here’s the silver lining—stories of intolerance get people talking. They spark conversations that raise awareness and send waves of change throughout the restaurant industry and beyond. Let’s face it, nobody wants a dining experience unloaded with prejudice; we’re all just trying to enjoy some tasty food, eggs or not. So here’s hoping that establishment reconsiders their approach… unless they’re aiming for a “how-not-to-do-it” handbook.
